Who can apply to MSMCS?

A: Prospective students must be residents of the Mat-Su Borough School District. We accept incoming juniors and seniors in the fall and spring.  Winter applications are limited to space and enrollment status. Due to the nature and rigor of our program, incoming juniors and seniors must take the Accuplacer and the ALEKS test to determine college placement prior to acceptance.  Students who apply to MSMCS must exhibit a high level of maturity and motivation, and be eager for a rigorous academic experience. Applicants to MSMCS must also have a history of good behavior to qualify for the program.

Q: How can I apply to MSMCS?

A: To apply to MSMCS you must submit a completed application by the deadline for each semester. If this date is not indicated, please call or email. Applications are available the first week of January for the fall semester.

Q: What kinds of things do you look for in a prospective student? 

A: There is no set "type" of student at Middle College High School. Students at MSMCS tend to be self-motivated, mature, independent, responsible, hard-working students, with a desire to be an active participant in their education. Our students are generally looking for a more challenging or flexible high school experience than they would get at a traditional high school.

Q: I missed the application deadline. Can I still apply?

A: Yes. We may be able to process an application after the deadline date. Please contact the Middle College. 

Q: I have submitted my application. Now what?

A: Students who have submitted applications will need to follow the step by step instructions for applying. Please visit: https://www.matsuk12.us/domain/6808   Those who have been accepted will be required to formally accept their offer via email, and complete additional paperwork for both the high school and Mat-Su College. Failure to respond to an acceptance offer by the deadline will forfeit your acceptance and result in your space being offered to another student.

Q: Will my student’s credits transfer out of state?

A: Yes! The University of Alaska is a Division I school that is accredited with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. UA accepts and reciprocates transfer credits from United States institutions are accepted if those institutions are accredited by the higher education commission of one of the following:

• Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
• New England Association of Schools and Colleges
• North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
• Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
• Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
• Western Association of Schools and Colleges

One way to check is look at a university that your student may be interested in attending.  I chose the Missouri State and selected Comm 115, a requirement for their secondary education degree.

An entire list of equivalent college courses and the university they were offered was given.

Additionally other universities give a comprehensive lists. The University of Tennessee has an online table that allows for the selection of state & institution. This table gives a comprehensive transfer of credits and the UA equivalent.

Q: Can my child participate in sports at their home high school as a Mat-Su Middle College School Student? 

A: Yes, students may participate in school sports and activities at their home high school within the district. MSBSD requires students to maintain a minimum GPA to play a sport. Any student whose GPA falls below the minimum will be put on academic probation and will no longer be eligible to play.

Q: Are there any dances or social events?

A: Yes. MSMCS has rallies, dances, club events, and plays as well as other different college events for our students through Mat-Su College. Students may also attend events at other high schools in the district with prior written approval of the home high school and MSMCS principal.

 Q: How much does it cost to attend?

A: Students do not pay tuition to attend college through MSMCS. All required high school and college textbooks are provided by MSMCS.

 Q: How much homework will I have?

A: Student homework will vary from class to class. You can expect between 2-3 hours of homework for each class.

 Q: If my student gets in, what is required for them to maintain enrollment at MSMCS?

A: All MSMCS students are required to: 

• Maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher
• Attend required orientation, seminars, book checkout & book returns
• Attend all classes every day
• Be on time for all college and high school classes
• Demonstrate the ability to make mature, independent, responsible, productive choices at all times 
• Take notes and ask questions
• Follow all MSC and MSMCS rules at all times.
• Be enrolled in a full schedule each semester (a minimum of 2 college courses with 2 high school classes, up to 16.0 college credits)
• Receive no marks lower than a "C" on any college course

Students who do not continue to meet the MSMCS requirements, or who are withdrawn from any college course, either by the instructor or at the students' request, will be placed on academic probation. 

 Q: What are the start and end times for a typical MSMCS day?

A: There is no such thing as a "typical day" at MSMCS. Students will have personalized schedules that meet the needs of the individual and their course requirements. However, classes can begin as early as 7:45 am and end as late as 9:45 pm. Some classes may require additional hours outside of regular school times. For example, students who are in drama are required to meet after hours for rehearsals and productions, and are required to be in attendance into the evening. On occasion, students may be required to be in attendance on a Saturday if productions fall on a weekend. 

Q: Are the college classes for high school students only?

A: No. All MSMCS students will be taking adult college courses with regular college students. Please keep in mind that this means your student will be exposed to adult content and adult discussions and will be expected to participate respectfully and with maturity. 

Q: Can we come take a tour of your school?

A: Yes, MSMCS is an integrated part of the college campus and we meet with students and families by appointment.
