MSBSD Student Devices
-
The Mat-Su Borough School District recognizes that electronic tools can benefit student learning and improve academic performance.
Starting in the 2022-23 school year, MSBSD will provide every student with a Chromebook to enhance their learning. Students in grades 3-12 will transport their Chromebook to and from school. Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd-grade students will store their Chromebooks in their classroom. Assigned Chromebooks will remain with the student throughout the school year and summer, and all 3rd and 8th graders will be assigned a new Chromebook.
Information & Guidelines for Use
-
Responsible Use
A student’s Chromebook use must comply with MSBSD’s responsible use policy for students, signed by a parent at registration.
-
Taking Care of the Device
Students are expected to keep their Chromebook safe, secure, charged, and in good working order. The provided case is expected to remain on the Chromebook at all times.
In addition, students must notify their teacher or librarian if their Chromebook is broken or fails to work properly. If a student accidentally leaves their device at home, they can check out a loaner device from their library. Limited loaners will be available and must be returned at the end of the school day.
The Chromebook screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.
- Do not lean on top of the Chromebook.
- Do not place anything near the Chromebook that could put pressure on the screen.
- Do not poke at the screen.
- Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g., pens, pencils, notebooks).
- Clean the screen with a soft, dry, anti-static or microfiber cloth. Do not use window cleaner, water, or any type of liquid on the Chromebook.
Other general precautions:
- No food or drink is allowed next to your Chromebook.
- Cords must be inserted carefully into the Chromebook.
- Students should never carry their Chromebook while the screen is open.
- Chromebooks should be shut down when not in use to conserve battery life.
- Chromebooks should never be forced into a bookbag as this may break the screen.
- Do not expose your Chromebook to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Extreme heat or cold may cause damage to the Chromebook.
- Do not leave your Chromebook in a vehicle overnight.
- Always bring your Chromebook to room temperature prior to turning it on.
-
Daily Expectations
Students will bring their Chromebook to school fully charged and ready to use. This means charging the device nightly and leaving the cord at home.
While not in use, devices should be powered off to ensure the battery stays charged during the school day.
Also, students should bring their own headphones. A mouse, while easier than the trackpad for some users, is optional.

Filtering & Monitoring
The internet is filtered on MSBSD District Chromebooks at all times, whether at school or on another network. Teachers can apply additional filtering rules to aid in classroom management. Parents can add further filtering rules via an easy-to-use Parent App
MSBSD uses a combination of Gaggle and GoGuardian Beacon for student safety.
Gaggle scans students' emails, chat messages and other materials uploaded to students' Google or Microsoft accounts in search of keywords, images or videos that could indicate self-harm, violence or sexual behavior.
GoGuardian Beacon is a machine-learning solution that notifies pre-determined school staff of instances where students may be at risk of suicide, self-harm, or potential harm to others. Beacon was designed to help school staff proactively identify at-risk students and quickly facilitate a response.

Parent App
GOGUARDIAN PARENT APP
The GoGuardian Parent is a mobile app designed to provide parents/guardians insight and control over their student's online activity when on school-managed devices and accounts.
The GoGuardian Parent app provides you with an additional set of internet controls that you can set for out-of-school hours. GoGuardian Parent was created to help provide students with additional educational support and is a companion to the classroom engagement and internet filtering tools that our schools use.
To access the app, please follow the instructions below:
- Download the app
- After the app is successfully downloaded and installed, open it up and enter the email address registered with the school. Note: If you forgot your registered email address, please reach out to your child's school. If the email you used at registration does not work, please contact the MSBSD Callcenter at (907) 761-HELP
- Login/Check Email: Check your email on your phone for a link to log in to the app. Tap the "Verify your email", and it will take you straight to the app. Note: If you don't have access to your email through the device you used to log in, tap on "Login with verification code", and copy and paste the verification code from the email into the app.

Lost/Stolen/Damaged Devices
DAMAGED, LOST OR STOLEN EQUIPMENT
Temporary replacements, known as “loaners”, are available at each school so learning is not disrupted by the repair process. Students are responsible for the care of the swap as if it were their issued device. Students can continue to access district resources from any device in case they need to be issued a loaner.DAMAGED EQUIPMENT
Accidents do happen. If the device is deemed to be damaged, the student may be subject to discipline and the cost of repair or replacement.LOST/STOLEN EQUIPMENT
If any equipment is lost, the parent/guardian/student must report it to the school immediately. Students can let a teacher or administrator know, and the staff member will assist him/her.
The circumstances of each situation involving lost equipment will be
investigated individually. Students/families may be billed for damaged or lost equipment.
If equipment is stolen, a police report must be filed, and a copy of the report must be provided to the school by the parent/guardian/student in a timely manner (next school day). If there is not clear evidence of theft, or the equipment has been lost due to student negligence, the parent/guardian/student may be responsible for the full cost of replacing the item(s). Failure to report the theft to the proper staff and follow the proper filing procedure may result in a bill for full replacement cost to the student.REPLACEMENT COSTS
In the event of equipment being lost, stolen or damaged, to ensure equipment is available to students MSBSD is required to repair or replace equipment. The intent of this fee schedule is to establish standard fees for equipment repair and/or replacement.
Legal title to the equipment belongs to the district and shall at all times remain with the district.Item Missing or Damaged Chromebook
